Dr. Roberto Tapia-Conyer, M.D., M.P.H., M.Sc., Dr.Sc., a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Glycosyn, is a Medical Doctor by the National University of Mexico (UNAM). He currently serves as General Director for the Carlos Slim Foundation AC. He has a Masters Degree in Science and Public Health by Harvard University, and Doctorate in Science by UNAM with honorable mention. He is also a Senior Professor and Tutor of Masters and Doctorate at the National University of Mexico and Visiting Professor at University of California San Francisco and member of the External Board of Directors of the Public Health Program at Irvine Campus.
He is also author of the Public Health Manual which is official text in many medical schools in Latin America; Dr. Tapia is author of books in health topics like addictions and vaccines and author of several articles and chapters in specialized books, as well as in national and international medical journals. Dr. Tapia is an active Member in: the Mexican Academy of Medicine, the Mexican Academy Sciences, the Mexican Academy of Surgery and the Mexican Public Health Association, where he was elected President from 1997 to 1998. He is also Member of the National Researchers System-level III, coordinated by the Mexico’s Council of Science and Technology.
He worked in the Public sector for 25 years at the Ministry of Health where he reached decision making positions such as General Director of Epidemiology (equivalent to US-CDC) from 1991 to 1997, period in which he built the foundations of today’s epidemiological surveillance system and the National Survey System. Dr. Tapia was appointed Vice-Minister of Prevention and Health Promotion for two presidential periods from 1997 to 2006. In 2007, Dr. Tapia was appointed Director-General of the Carlos Slim Health Institute where he served until 2012.
He is active member of La Caixa Foundation in Barcelona, Spain and President of Patronato Nacional de Centros de Integración Juvenil. His work experience is based on health topics related to innovative strategies in Public Health including vaccinology research, technological, operational and virtual learning platforms.
